A responsible person aged at least 16 years must accompany all children under the age of 8 into the swimming pool area. They must go into the water with the children they are accompanying and must maintain a constant watch over the children for whom they are responsible and maintain close contact with those children who are weak or non swimmers.

We recommend that babies under the age of 6 months do not participate in general swimming sessions, but are introduced to the pool swimming environment by attending specific parent and baby sessions, details of which can be obtained from the Leisure Centre.

A weak or non swimmer is defined as any child who does not hold or meet the criteria of the ASA/ISRM Pool Swimming Standard Award.

Weak or non swimmers are restricted to the designated non swimmer areas of the pools which are the small pool and shallow end of the main pool.

Children under the age of 4 must be accompanied into the water by a responsible person on a one to one basis. The sole exception of this is that two children under 4 years (whether swimmers or non swimmers) can be accompanied by one responsible person if both children are wearing armbands or other approved buoyancy aids and remain in the designated non swimmer areas of the pool. (This exception also applies for two children where one child is under 4 and one child is aged 4 to 7)

Children aged 4 - 7 must be accompanied into the water by a responsible person on a maximum two to one basis.

The purpose of this child admissions policy is to help safeguard all children using the swimming pool and it is not intended to stop children and families having fun and enjoying their swimming session.
